PentDougCost: The Doug 50 - July 5, 2016

1 Make a Donation

On this celebration of a half century of living, I would like to give a bit of life and comfort to Baby Abraham and the other Babies at Anna Vitiello Orphanage just outside Guatemala City. This orphanage cares for babies living with hiv and other illnesses. The baby nannies give daily care to these little sweeties.

I met little Abraham (seen pictured) in 2012 while visiting his orphanage. Due to my own carelessness, I contracted Hepatitis A from him. I’m totally recovered from the illness, but Abraham will live with the affects of the illness for his entire life.

Our shared illness has bonded me to the little guy, and I am proud to support him and his orphanage-mates.

The monies donated will provide for loving hands through Nannies to give him care, support, and comfort so that he and the others at Anna Vitello can live as full lives as possible.

I’m hoping to raise $5,000 to support the Nanny efforts.

You are welcome to contribute any amount, I encourage you to go with the 50 theme and contribute $50 or some easy derivative of 50, like $5, $25, or double it and contribute $100 or $500.

In order to make it fun (and to encourage you to give higher amounts) I’m offering these incentives:

  • Donate $50 and get a PENTDOUGCOST bandana.
  • Donate $100 and receive a PENTDOUGCOST t-shirt (while supplies last).

And, with every donation of $50 you can add a “do this” command at the mile of your choice. I.e.: at mile 7 “ask a passerby for a dance”; at mile 12 “jump in the lake”; at mile 36 “do a somersault”; or something of your choice. I will post your request and my completion of it on social media, so be thoughtful about what you choose as people will know that it was you who made me do it.

2 Run With Me

Beginning at 8:00 am (Central Time) on Tuesday, July 5th, I’ll run around Minneapolis’s famed chain of lakes—Isles, Calhoun, and Harriet—continuously for 50 miles. This will take until approximately 7:00 pm that same day, and I’d love your company for any part of that run.

I will not be running fast, so most anyone even thinking about running with me will be able to keep up.

I would love to see a big group of us on the last trip around Lake Harriet (2.8 miles). I should be starting the last trip around Lake Harriet at 6:30 pm.

We will conclude the run with a party at the Lake Harriet bandshell (see details below).

As planned, the running times and sequence will go as follows (all times approximate).

  • Isles: 2x clockwise
  • Isles: 2x counter-clockwise
  • Isles: 2x clockwise
  • Calhoun: 2x clockwise
  • Calhoun: 2x counter-clockwise
  • Calhoun: 1x clockwise
  • Harriet: 2x clockwise
  • Harriet: 2x counter-clockwise
  • Harriet: 2x clockwise
  • Harriet: last lap
  • Finish: start of after-party

Want to know where Doug is in real time?

Follow Doug on Facebook, and on the morning of July 5th, he’ll post a special link where you can see his live, all-day-long run tracking.

3 Be The Crew

No man is an island, and anyone running 50 miles needs a passionate support crew. During the whole day, we’ll have our own aid station at which you’re invited to help for as long as you’d like.

The station will position itself near the south bank of each lake, and will keep me stocked in food, salt tablets, spare clothing, and human encouragement. (Look for a small tent with table and chairs.)

As planned, the crew will pitch itself as follows (all times approximate):

  • Lake of the Isles
  • Lake Calhoun
  • Lake Harriet

4 Join The Party

Starting at 6:30 pm, come join the after-party! The fun will start with a last trip around Lake Harriet then we’ll celebrate the 50 miles—and 50 years—and, more importantly, the support raised for the Anna Vitiello Orphanage—with a cookout dinner and celebration in the picnic area on the North side of the Lake Harriet bandshell. Bring something to grill, share, drink, and/or give away.

Also: If you want to want to tag along with a big group for the last two laps, arrive at Lake Harriet at 6:00 pm (final hour of running) or 6:30 pm (final half-hour of running)!

5 Run In Spirit

If you want to run with Doug, but can’t make it to Minneapolis on July 5, we still want you to be part of the celebration! Take a selfie photo or video of your run from any time that day, post it to Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, and be sure to hashtag it with #doug50. We can’t wait to see you all, even virtually!
